WE LOST USD5,000 FOR JUST ONE WORD

Some years ago, we had a customer who entered the business of clothes hangers for the first time. He wanted to purchase hangers for a big hotel range. They needed anti-theft hangers, and they chose me as a supplier. I was very happy seeing that they were ready to put their trust on me.


I told them about the quality of the hangers, and about the different grades of quality. There are three grades of quality:

A, which is the highest level.

A/B mixed, which shows the wood in its natural grade, and

B, with black knots, lines, holes, and the possibility of an uneven lacquering.

I even showed them samples of all three grades to make sure they were aware of all relevant facts.






I thought our customer was aware that their big hotel chain needed A-grade hangers, and so I slightly suggested this to our customer. I warned him, he should use at least A/B-grade hangers. 


However, they didn’t accept my advice. Because of mass production, B-grade hangers do not always show the best effect. But B grade is really attractive due to its price. The customer finally decided to order B-grade hangers. I wondered why they wouldn’t follow my advice. But I didn’t want to be disrespectful or let them think I was underestimating them, so I followed their idea.

 

Eventually, the responsible from the big hotel chain was very upset with the result. They said, the surface of the hangers could damage their client’s silk clothes. Our customer was afraid of losing this big client, up to the point that they would call me several times a day to try to solve this matter. 

 

I deeply regretted not having insisted in keeping my advice. After all, we are the professionals in the business. I was so sorry for this situation, even though my friends  tried to comfort me saying it was not my responsibility. 


After time thinking, I made a decision. I decided to assume the responsibility and show them how a true professional solves problems. It took one week to finish 50,000 pieces of A-grade wooden hangers and ship them by air delivery — in normal conditions, it takes us 45 days to finish an order of wooden hangers—. We solved the matter successfully and the big hotel range responsible was satisfied with these A-grade hangers.

 

Although my customer and I lost money, I still think I made the right decision. I helped my customer keep their big client, helped both their business and mine, and you know what? They have kept placing orders for my hangers ever since then.


Business is not always easy, and international business is not just about quotations. Business experience has an immeasurable value. Some decisions are hard to make, but they pay off, especially if you deal with honest partners.
